⏵ October State of the Game and Arrivals ⏴ Hello, Etrayans! Welcome to the end of October! We hope you enjoy the Halloweeny mingle log that is going up alongside this post. 🎃 As a heads up: headmod will take a bit of a break through November due to life getting busy elsewhere! However, the mission, TDM, and everything else will go up as scheduled. Mod responses may be a little slower (as they have been through October also due to how unexpectedly busy it's been, our bad!) but outside of that, everything should still be running as usual! November is a mission month, but it will be a little more light-hearted in comparison to the previous mission! Using the feedback we received on our last post, we will be condensing the amount of time missions run down to one to two weeks, but will keep our schedule otherwise the same as it has been. This should, hopefully, give players time to complete their mission threads while also leaving plenty of space for characters to get into shenanigans around Etraya itself. it's nice to meet you scout! we can be from ye olden times together, even though 37 is from like 2007, they're like ancient greeks in a way. 37 isn't a science girl, but math and research with magic? she's all about that!! and yes, another like-minded individual who certainly must understand that with how universal math is that its more honest than the words spoken. i think with him being math and research she'd want to learn what his role is and see if she can apply his findings and teachings to her issue since she's also handling a big job like that.

what happens when two people who think they're right walk into a room together. it'll be good because on the island they would do debates very often so she's prepared for this, she would argue to hell and back until given a proof and THEN she'll change her ways. i hope lin can enjoy himself when the debate starts

Exactly! Math means the same thing to everyone who looks at it! Which is very different from words. Also math doesn't change its meaning based on stupid things like tone of voice or body language. It's objective and verifiable (except when it isn't - some of the modern physics he's learning makes him unhappy poor guy). There's what his role is and what he wants it to be. His society thinks he needs to be a governing nobleman and a healer, but he's a mad magi-scientist with a heart of gold by temperament. He's very free with his information and will pretty happily share/answer questions.

Definitely some butting heads, but it sounds like they'd both be reasonable about/enjoy it. Lin doesn't have that much of an ego, so if he's proven wrong his response is usually 'well now we know the truth'. (Usually. He is one of those pesky humans and has a lot of their emotions, he just sucks at knowing them and they tend to come out in inconvenient ways.) He'll be really happy to have someone who can challenge him intellectually. Bonus points for being smarter than he is: That means he can dump all the work on her/direct people with questions her way. lmao.

He can swim! He's a very average swimmer. lbr, if he couldn't he'd build a boat to see the dolphin. He has questions...

you actually get it!! spoken like a true mathematician, and don't worry 37 will also talk modern math to him to upset him a little more, but maybe if it comes from a likeminded mathhead he will feel at ease (probably not), but she'll try because what matters is the process of how they get to the answer, not the actual answer. building blocks as to why we got to point a to point b!!

please build a boat so she can complain about the mathematical properties of it that she doesnt like it and she could poke a hole in one side and make him sink if she was hostile, her eyes see shapes and numbers, he has to perfect this if he wants to go dolphin sightseeing

Electron probability clouds displease him, 37. He's making progress on modern math: In his world modern mathematics is forbidden/censored knowledge, so he loves that Etraya has teaching books and people who know this stuff. In Fodlan, he has to derive anything above basic calculus from scratch and that suuuucks. It sucks so hard.

I love the idea that she doesn't see him as human/will see him as some odd hybrid. 'You have far too much numerical literacy to be human.' Also the idea of Linhardt trying to explain people to 37 - if she listens she's going to end up with some weird ideas of how people work. looool she's welcome to get on him about his slack, but it never works! ;)

Lin knows his boat sucks, okay! Again: Forbidden knowledge! He's a guy from the pseudo 1600s who's doing his best. If you sink his boat, his notes will be ruined and he'll be pissy about it. Lin is allergic to physical effort, making him tread water consistently to see the dolphin would be hilarious. He'd bitch the entire time. He's not shy about his opinions...

there are humans that can use arcanist abilities, but they use machinery to make that happen, but she doesn't see that on him so she would be ??? you are not an imaginary number, stop that and then it goes to why do you see yourself as a human? classifications and all that she's still learning as she's only been on an island with arcanists and no humans, and if they did they got thrown to a gorgon etc etc. it would be interesting to her because even though she labels people, she doesn't want that to strictly be their fate but there are some arcanists that act human so maybe that's something he's doing. now i'm crying at what lin has in store like what the hell is he going to be saying

oh i am so sorry lin, 37 loves to work and write proofs so the only way to solve is to take part. especially when math is involved, but don't worry, show her his write ups and she will remember (the good parts) and expel the ones she didn't care for and it will be so useless because she will claim she didn't like how he did a formula and want to rewrite the entire thing

Yeah, his learning process is...chaotic. There's so much to learn! And absolutely no accepted/standard pathway for Linhardt to learn all of it, so he's just going at it randomly. He's mostly slowed down by the fact that he does want to confirm each step: It's not enough to know, he has to understand WHY things work. Which in a lot of cases involves the mathematical underpinnings.

The only cult he can accept is one that demands nothing of him.

The classification system discussion could be fun! Category theory, away! Lin possesses an odd combination of really caring for people and finding them interesting and also not understanding them at all. Like how a lot of people feel about cats: So good, so interesting how different they all are, but they do so many things that don't make sense. He includes himself in this and will absolutely discuss things about him that are illogical. Like why does how attractive someone is make him care if they like him? Objectively it doesn't matter! And why does he like peaches and not grapes? (This is why his actual main scientific interest is magical genetics, but he doesn't know what genes are so... he's from the olden times so a lot of the sciences still blur together. Gotta invent microscopes before you can figure out genes, so gotta figure out optics, so gotta figure out the math...)

Yes, but consider: She could do the proof and he could read it later! And in the meantime he can sleep! Doesn't that sound better? He could just sleep while she works!

But also, you need to relax, 37. Like, please. Take a nap in the sun! It's great! (In this, he is very 'human'.)
