It will still absorb negative emotions but at a slower rate! The instinctive need to protect it will only get stronger with time, to try and deter them from staying too far away from their plushies. If Bruce manages to keep some distance between them throughout the entire first week, but it isn't destroyed, his plushie will still take on a nightmarish form, but may be significantly less intense.
