SEPTEMBER MISSION PLOTTING

CONTENT WARNINGS: Psychological horror, hallucinations, paranoia, body horror, violence, death imagery, loss of autonomy, existential horror.

❬ Ashen Veil ❭

There have always been shadows cast over Etraya.
Im'mari may be the first one remembers when they think of the darkness surrounding them: how it had ruled over Moorecroft's nights and controlled a few individuals in Etraya proper to spread its influence. The spacecraft that had crash-landed through parts of the barrier may be another: a boy forsaken in the crumbling remains of what had been his parents' home. Dolls that had once taken in negative emotion only to expunge them back onto those they had been protecting. Regardless of where the darkness had come from, what's evident is that it has always been simmering under the surface of Etraya, and given the nature of everyone's arrival to the city, the purpose behind their existence, it's doubtful it will ever quite fade. Saving lives at the cost of other lives is not a light process, but everyone here knows what's at risk, what they are fighting for.

What the meaning behind that lingering darkness is.

And while the darkness has always lingered, on the night of September 18th, it rises. A dark, thick fog rolls into the city bubble from the open vent, but from the moment it appears, it becomes evident it's no normal fog. It feels heavy as a memory, tastes similar to iron on one's tongue. One can try to hide from it, covering their faces in masks both magical and scientifically advanced to try and filter it out, but no mask seems to function well enough to keep them safe. They breathe it in, and any extraordinary, more-than human ability they once had to keep them safe becomes impossible to reach: touchable but not solid enough to grasp onto. Those that keep them alive remain intact, but do not provide any additional assistance: healers whose ability to heal keeps their body functional will be functional, but further injuries will heal at the speed they would on an average human.

Yet it is not only the people inside the fog that seem to shift, but the city itself - buildings twist into something both familiar and alien, but they feel more like they're straight out of one's nightmares: facilities long-since destroyed that had once caused severe grief, places one has only seen within their nightmares, things best left avoided and yet... here they are, standing in Etraya.

Feeling like a nightmare that has come to life.

No one enters the fog unchanged. It drags forth what is buried deepest: regrets and sins, the things that lurk under the bed and in the closet when one is trying to lull themselves to sleep. Regardless, it's here now, and those of Etraya must find a way to overcome it.

❬ Into the Dark ❭

There are a few guidelines to utilize when characters are stuck within the Fog:
  • You can only see a few feet ahead. Shapes will appear, vanish, and reappear at random intervals.

  • Not everything one can see through the fog is real or truly there.

  • Footsteps will echo oddly, and sometimes, one could swear they hear a second--or third--set when there truly isn't anyone there.

  • Time does not move the same within the fog. Minutes may feel like days, months, years.

  • Reality shifts within the fog. It may feel impossible to tell truth from lie.

  • Characters may become separated despite their best attempts at staying together. The fog works in mysterious ways, bringing people together and forcing them apart.

The longer one lingers within the Fog, the more it manages to seep into their memory, tainting them from within. What began as a clear mission, to find the opening allowing the nebula's particles into Etraya, begins to fade. Why are you wandering outside? Was there purpose to your venture? Were you alone? Did you lose the people beside you, or were they never there to begin with? The past may feel like it's unraveling, pulling threads of core memories and warping them into nightmares - or perhaps tangling threads together until one cannot tell what was a dream and what was reality.

One's body is not spared from the effects either. Focus on the Fog, on the mission, and one will find that breathing itself becomes a difficult task - as if they are drowning on air itself. The ground may feel uneven, as if walking through dunes coated in blood. As their focus shifts away from the mission, their breath comes easier - something does not want to be found and is working hard to keep Etrayans from focusing too hard on it.

But the Fog is not all those of Etraya will need to contend with. As it spreads throughout the cityscape, beasts arrive with it. Twisted creatures that may be familiar to those they approach - perhaps a beast they've fought before, or a mangled version of someone they had once known. These creatures are not real but illusions cast by the Fog itself as it weaves through their heads, pulling memories and nightmares out into the open. However, while they may not be real, they will feel very real until the moment their victim realizes their true nature. It's possible, too, that these illusions settle over loved ones and friends, making them appear to be enemies when they are truly allies encased in treacherous illusions.

Every so often, however, the Fog seems to thin and leaves only the truth behind. Perhaps your friend you were walking beside sounded as if they were whispering how much they would love to rid themselves of you, but you turn and see their bright smile, and you know in that moment, you are safe alongside them.

But those moments are far and few between, leaving uncertainty in their wake. Perhaps the Fog is all there ever has been. Perhaps this is what is deserved. Maybe, just maybe, this is where one belonged all along.

❬ REALITY IS THAT WHICH ❭

... when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.
Some players may be looking for a more intense, customized horror experience, and we welcome them to sign up below. The mods will offer a custom scenario suggestion for your character(s).

Sign ups take place as individual characters or as small groups (1-3 characters per group) and have the potential to either have a detailed prompt write up or a mod-driven thread. The number of mod-driven threads will depend on the level of interest we receive, and we can commit to active responses for the duration of the mission (Sept 19 - Oct 3) and not beyond. Individuals will be randomized to partner with other individual sign-ups.

We're interested in tailoring this to your horror trope preferences and ideas, so please mention on the sign up form if there are any particular favorites or limits you'd like for your custom scenario. Some suggestions for you to consider: body horror, eldritch / cosmic, psychological, atmospheric, religious, gore, ghosts and hauntings, science fiction, comedic, folk myths, survival, existential doubt.

Small groups who enthusiastically and actively engage with their scenario may receive a visit from a newly introduced NPC who will give a plot hint, either around Echo or how and why this current event is taking place. We will assess this towards the end of the mission period and contact your group if you're selected.

Feel free to use the plotting comments here as a way to find others interested in forming a small group around similar themes!

Sign ups will close on 9/17 EST midnight.

❬ OPT OUT ❭

For those who would like to opt out of having their characters experience any of this, including the fog, those characters may find that the ground beneath them has simply swallowed them whole and dropped them into a large dome-like structure underground. The drop, while severe, will not cause them any physical damage. Their devices will not connect to those still in the city above, and a mysterious crate full of basic necessities. The dome is full of greenery, and a synthetic sun circles around the outside of it.

There is a purpose behind this dome, but given the nature of this mission, we will not be answering questions regarding it. Characters stuck in the dome will suddenly drop into a deep slumber near the end of the mission and awaken in the hospital. This will be a plot we explore in the future!

❬ MISSION NOTES ❭

📌 — Players may use their judgment on how much to depower their character. We want them to interact with the mission and feel real risk, but not to the extent that it makes it difficult for anyone to play their character.

📌 — Boundaries around reality are blurring. Things do not need to make sense for this mission. If you're looking for ideas on what to have your characters encounter, feel free to try the SCP Archive.

📌 — We realize the purpose behind this plot is to close the vent Aurora opened allowing particles from the nebula in! However, we do want to note this will not be possible through finding the vent and instead will need to be done through the NPC interaction listed above. Surprise!

📌 — For all questions relating to this mission, please refer to the mission queries comment on this post. All other questions can be directed to the FAQ.

📌 — Alex Won, please report for the consequences of your actions.

Is there a limit to how many custom scenarios our characters can participate in if they're all group-scenarios? Since the detailed write-up is an option I was wondering if it's a pretty good "as many as you reasonable believe you can or will play" policy here.

Characters: This one is just Alex.

Preferences: I leave that to the mods! I figure this can be a one on one NPC thread for, uh, Alex's great and endearing reach out into space.

Limits: No child or animal torture, no permanent disfigurement? I'm not sure what's needed here, but I'm pretty good to roll with anything.

Because I'm morbidly curious. What happens if Crane takes a sample of fog? Could it interact with other gaseous substances? (like his fear toxin) If so, does it keep in containment or will it vanish once the event is over?

... As soon as you said waiting for her to wake up you dang diddly darn knew I was going for that! Quick question: is prose or brackets easier for you?

Dwayne ir'Dorn | OC | OTA

[personal profile] will_chase_balls 2025-09-12 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Player: Robin
Contact Info: [plurk.com profile] serpentcyborg
Limits: I'm open to whatever, but I'd rather not have Dwayne die unless there's an interesting plot reason

Character Name: Dwayne ir'Dorn
Wanted CR: I'd love for someone to get stuck with.
Fear Hooks: He will definitely be facing Mournland Horrors, since that's something the Karrnath military sent him after that fits perfectly here. Since his father was turned into a greater undead right before his arrival here and he's not sure if he's a vampire or lich, I also might play with his father being a rotting, animated wolfman corpse.
Mission Plans: He'll be fighting through beasts and trying to figure out how to close the vent.

Anything Else: So this makes him extremely suspicious of Echo, and the paranoia aspect of the poison gas is going to exacerbate this a lot. While he understands they're brought here to test whether their worlds are worthy of being saved, so random tests do make sense, deliberately opening a vent to let poison gas in to make them find and close it seems pointlessly sadistic.

Between the negative feelings about the fact that they're being poisoned to test them and the increased paranoia from the exposure, Dwayne will decide to make a conspiracy board, but instead of actually connecting the central point to pieces of evidence, it will just be string connecting Echo to random thoughts he's had. Things like 'he's releasing poison gas on us for entertainment', 'evil god' and 'might kill everyone we've ever known if we don't fall in line?' He will be happy to share this board with anyone who's interested.

Characters: Percy and Kaeya
Preferences: We can do either or, prompt might be easier with our ideas. We are interested in
Percy - body horror, Wendigo aspects, lack of control, confronting the past
Kaeya - body horror, confronting the past, fears made manifest, and forced dependence

Limits: hard limit - no extreme gore or eye horror. Like if a limb gets cut off, let’s gloss over the details of how. Plz no spiders. That’s it.

Harold Finch

[personal profile] ornithologist 2025-09-12 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Character Name: Harold Finch
Wanted CR: Harold will definitely need people to stick with during this, as he is largely helpless on his own and likely to end up hurt in other peoples' delusions. He works as a good provider of comfort and rationality, honestly! He will not be lashing out trying to harm anyone regardless of the circumstances, so he could also be a good victim if you don't mind some CR retaliation / fallout.
Fear Hooks: His life is very sad but really not that full of trauma. He has some pretty standard fears around people he loves dying, though we could get into some interesting stuff regarding surveillance state fears and constantly trying to hide. Paranoia is an easy one that could be exacerbated. Alternately or alongside that, early versions of the Machine going out of control and trying to kill him is... a thing... that really happened, so that could be fun to touch on.
Mission Plans: Harold is probably trying to find answers and help as many people as he can. I'm up for him playing a supportive role for others or if anyone wants to play around with getting sucked into a dystopian 1984-esque setting, that could work, too! Also up for custom scenarios if there's interest!

Toph Beifong

[personal profile] fieldtrip 2025-09-12 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Character Name: Toph Beifong
Wanted CR: Toph is pretty new so this could be a great opportunity for her to form some closer CR! She's a spunky loudmouthed gremlin child who sincerely wants to help people.
Fear Hooks: Toph is extraordinarily homesick, so things set in AtLA-verse or around there are possible. She also has a deep fear of getting stuck being a dutiful heiress, so Toph as polite trapped rich girl is another option. Since she's an Expi CRAU, she also had an incident there that has really traumatized her where she was psychologically affected to become more violent than she naturally is and used her metal-bending to wave a knife around in the air and pretty gruesomely cut up a giant snake who was swallowing someone hole. Yeah. That happened. I'd be happy to extend that theme of Toph under the influence can be terrifying.
Mission Plans: For the purposes of not making myself or Toph crazy, she will keep enough bending to be able to orient herself and navigate, but not to do any proper earthbending. She will be extremely cranky but not devastated.

Aliarra Landsritter | OC (D&D)

[personal profile] lockdownbuild 2025-09-12 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Player: Dragon
Contact Info: [plurk.com profile] ultimaweapon or ping me in the discord server
Limits: Nothing directly, but see below

Character Name: Aliarra Landsritter
Wanted CR, Fear Hooks, Mission Plans: I'm combining these three because I've got a pretty specific take on this event that will take some explaining.

I don't like horror. This is nothing against the event, it's a good event! But I, personally, would not enjoy and have no desire to play it straight. The most direct thing I would like is the scrambling of a sense of time, because that relates to Aliarra's own issues.

Outside of that, I would prefer to subvert, counter, address, or defeat the tropes in play. Aliarra is an experienced (and jaded) adventurer who's been through some stuff, including literal hells; even absent her abilities and powers, there really isn't much that can faze her any more, she's dealt with pretty much all of it. So rather than trying to crank it up to 11 for her, she serves much better as someone to help others address whatever they're facing. Monsters? Punch 'em. Eldritch horrors? Punch 'em. Psychological issues? Psychologically punch 'em. Whether she's a tired, cynical ally, a tired, cynical friend, or a tired, cynical mentor, her best purpose in any scenario is tired, cynical support. If you want your character to address some issues or get through this with some positive results, she's your girl!

Since I'm playing it like this, that means:
  • I'm not going to tag out to any actual horror scenarios with anyone I haven't plotted with, because I don't want to spoil anyone's plans by bringing my preferred intent into a scene that it isn't compatible with.
  • Undefeatable elements are out. Body horror, death, extreme injury or gore, hopeless fights, or anything designed to render characters helpless or unable to act against their effects. If the horror can't be addressed at all, my goals wouldn't be suited to the scene.
  • I'm up for custom scenarios so long as they take all this into account!
  • If there's no takers, I don't mind opting-out entirely, so no obligations or anything.

  • Anything Else: I'm slowly building a character and permissions sheet for her here. It isn't specified yet but if you'd prefer to opt-out you can comment there, it's all screened.

Would she like to beat up on some Mournland Horrors? It'll be ridiculously easy for her, since she's a level 18 character and Dwayne's from a low level campaign, so anything he'd have encountered and survived from his backstory will be like paper mache monsters to her.

    [personal profile] lockdownbuild 2025-09-12 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, that diminishes a heck of a lot with total loss of all class features and magic items (though not the trippin'!) but it sure won't stop her from fighting them anyway, because that's what she does!

Limits: Death! Already have future plans for that happening with Sleipnir.

    Character Name: Accelerator
Wanted CR: Accelerator will be depowered for the event, so he will have to rely on his secondary power of GUN. Outside of his handgun he isn't very good in a fight, so people he can stick with would be a good idea.
Fear Hooks: Relevant horror themes for Accelerator: medical experimentation/sci-fi, body horror, gore/murder, religious/spiritual, psychological. He was a guinea pig for science experiments growing up, and has murdered a lot of people in really horrific ways as part of that. Something I haven't touched on too often is that his canon is steeped very heavily in Aleister Crowley's writings, which means gnosticism, hermeticism, and Western esoteric occultism. Accelerator has had to deal with gods, angels, and eldritch beasts, and has experienced some crazy cosmic stuff that could be fun to play around with. Also, fun fact: the closer a Level 5 esper gets to Level 6 the more cosmic horror they become.

His fears mainly revolve around the harm he's caused people, the fears surrounding being so powerful, and the loss of his humanity. Torturing and killing Sleipnir last event did not help those fears, so they're still very prominent in his mind.
Mission Plans: He'll mainly be interested in completing the mission. He'll still have his supergenius intellect to help out with that.

True, but Dwayne would also help! Also, Dwayne is a level three character, so she's not going to be needing those class features or magic items to deal with monsters he's dealt with before.
